History and Future of Fenestration: Where Have We Been? Where are We Heading?

Apr 13, 2015

This presentation details the many reasons why designers and researchers should focus attention on fenestration as a major part of total building energy use and end use consumption as we strive for a 50 percent reduction in carbon emissions. It discusses a new vision for window performance, centered on "Net Zero Energy" Fenestration and the "Transparent Intelligent Facade" and discusses future technologies (dynamic fenestration, highly insulating dynamic fenestration, and dynamic fenestration with integrated facades). In that light, it also presents the changing "scale" and function of R&D with respect to glazing and window technology, and the simulation tools being used in national labs today that can help us get there.
